Coca Cola launches Plastic Recycling Initiative in Hyderabad

Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages (HCCB), in collaboration with Waste Ventures India Ltd, a social enterprise in waste management, launched a project in Hyderabad to recycle plastic waste.

Through this project, HCCB, in liaison with Waste Ventures, aims to collect plastic waste in Hyderabad through a dedicated fleet of collection vehicles.

An estimated 4-5 tonne of plastic is likely to be collected every day. The collected plastic will be converted into useful products like T-shirts, fabrics, backpacks, etc. to close the loop and create circular economy on plastic.

This initiative is aligned with the global theme of World Environment Day, Beat Plastic Pollution, and wishes to combat the challenges surfacing from single-use plastic. The long-term vision is to leverage the scale and resources of Coca Cola’s entire system to ensure that all the packaging material is reused and recycled to minimise its environmental impact.

HCCB intended to create a circular economy on plastics by closing the loop, connecting every player in the plastic recycling value chain starting from waste collectors to recyclers.

The integrated recycling programmes shall be established through multi-stakeholder partnerships to create an end-to-end ecosystem for plastic recycling in the country.

Plans are afoot to initiate similar programmes across 50 major cities in India over the next two years.
