The Lucid Air sedan from startup EV maker Lucid is a new car that pops from the automotive forest floor like a rainbow, and its degree of innovation and complexity is as fresh and surprising as multi-colored tree bark 🙂
The compact, power-dense Lucid Air motor delivers up to 1,111 horsepower and 1,390 lb-ft of torque thanks to an ingenious new stator winding composed of 24 square copper wires “woven” into a simple assembly needing minimum bonding.
While the chemistry of the cylindrical batteries is standard, the pack is designed to ease automated assembly in a proprietary and award-winning injection-molded casing that integrates all of the power-conducting bus bars.
According to Lucid, this results in more effective cooling and easier installation, as well as the elimination of heavy, pricey glue in the pack.
It’s bi-directional, so it can “jump charge” other EVs. It can handle 19.2 kW of level-2 home charging, upconverts DC fast-charging power from 400 volts in earlier stations, and accepts 300kW (or more) of the most recent 800-volt “juice.” As a result, the Lucid Air is the quickest charging EV on the market today, capable of adding 300 miles in 20 minutes.
The initial Lucid Air Dream and Grand Touring versions will have a range of 451-520 miles from a battery capacity of 118 and 112 kWh, respectively.
The interior design forges its own path, rejecting both the Mercedes EQS’s wall-to-wall screen idea and Tesla’s zealous simplicity.
The Lucid features Bilstein Damptronic Sky adjustable shocks, similar to those used by Mercedes, but with coil springs (the S-Class and EQS use air springs).
All of these resulted in Lucid Air being named “2022 MotorTrend Car of the Year.”
