Climate change was not a major issue only a decade ago. Given its significant ramifications and influence on our everyday lives, it has now become a source of popular debate and worry.
Various climate change initiatives have been implemented by the BJP-led Central government during the last nine years. Green Hydrogen Mission, GOBARdhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan Scheme), Green Credit Program, MISHTI, Amrit Dharohar, and others are among them.
During India’s National Statement at CoP26 in Glasgow in October-November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a worldwide appeal for Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Following that, Mission LiFE was established to recognize the significance of sustainable lifestyles and consumption patterns in attempts to combat climate change.
NITI Aayog has constituted 11 committees to develop circular economy action plans for various waste categories.
Circular Economy Action Plans for 10 waste categories, including Lithium-ion batteries, E-waste, Toxic and hazardous industrial waste, Scrap metal (ferrous and non-ferrous), Tyre and Rubber, End of Life Vehicles, Gypsum, Used Oil, Solar Panels, and Municipal Solid Waste, have been finalized and are currently being implemented.
The National Clean Air Program and Green Skill Development Program are some other example. FAME ( Faster Adoption and manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric vehicles) scheme is aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles by subsiding them.
Another popular programed is Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati Program, an initiative to promote natural farming this has been adopted very successfully by various states. To top it all, the government has introduced Prakriti: Messenger of the Earth as the mascot of sustainability and environmental protection, aiming to raise awareness among the general public.
