While self-driving cars receive a lot of attention, self-driving trucks are predicted to have a greater influence in the coming years. This is because trucks spend a significant amount of time on the highway, which is a relatively simpler environment to introduce automated driving technology.
TuSimple, an autonomous trucking company, has successfully conducted several autonomous test drives on public roads in China. The company asserts that this is the first instance of a self-driving truck test conducted without a human present, although it may seem like a common occurrence.
TuSimple conducted a test run in which their autonomous vehicle traveled 62 kilometers through various challenging road and weather conditions, including traffic signals, lane changes, fog, and crosswinds. The test took place in both urban and highway environments within a port area.
TuSimple has become one of the first companies to receive a license for fully driverless testing in China. This allows them to conduct tests of their SAE Level 4 autonomous driving technology in specific areas.
TuSimple China, a branch of company, began testing autonomous vehicles in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area in 2018. Since then, they have driven over 600,000 kilometers without any accidents or traffic violations as of June 2023.
Shanghai is planning to be the first city in China to pass a law allowing autonomous trucks to be tested without a driver. TuSimple could be one of the first companies to take advantage of this opportunity.
