Cement Giant UltraTech Sets Sights On 85% Green Energy

UltraTech Cement

UltraTech Cement Limited has announced its plan to increase the amount of renewable energy in its energy blend to 85% by 2030. As a step towards this goal, the company aims to raise its current share of green energy from 22% to 60% by 2026. It also intends to meet all the electricity needs from renewable sources by 2050 as part of its commitment to the RE100 initiative.

Additionally, the company is focused on doubling its energy productivity as part of the EP100 initiative. To achieve these objectives, they have implemented various measures, including transitioning to renewable energy sources and expanding waste heat recovery systems (WHRS).

Currently, the company has a green energy capacity of 691 MW, which includes 262 MW of waste heat recovery system and 429 MW of contracted renewable energy. This accounts for about 22% of UltraTech’s total energy needs. The company has implemented a comprehensive strategy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the use of green and renewable energy. This strategy involves using new technologies to reduce reliance on thermal energy in production processes and promoting sustainable transportation with logistics partners.

Additionally, it has committed to not investing in more thermal power capacity in order to further reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of green energy.

UltraTech is actively exploring new technologies to reduce carbon emissions in its operations. They are collaborating with Coolbrook to integrate the RDH technology into one of their cement manufacturing units, which will eliminate the use of fossil fuels and rely on clean energy sources instead. They are also partnering with technology firms like CarbonOrO, Coomtech, and Fortera to investigate carbon capture and storage solutions.

UltraTech is adopting green logistics by using CNG or LNG trucks. They have committed to installing 1,000 CNG or LNG vehicles and introducing 500 electric trucks by June 2025. They are working with their logistics partners to replace traditional diesel vehicles with CNG and LNG trucks whenever possible.

UltraTech began using CNG vehicles in 2021 and LNG vehicles in 2022. They currently have over 390 CNG trucks and 50 LNG trucks operating in 17 industrial units. The company aims to rapidly expand this initiative to additional manufacturing sites.
