Airtel’s data center arm, Nxtra, is taking a big step towards sustainability. The company recently joined the RE100 initiative, a global program for businesses committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity. This move makes it the only data center organization in India to pledge to RE100.
Nxtra boasts the largest network of data centers in India, with 12 large facilities and a whopping 120 edge data centers scattered across the country.
“We’re an environmentally responsible company,” said Ashish Arora, CEO, in a statement. “We’ve been actively adopting clean energy alternatives, and joining RE100 with its commitment to 100% renewable electricity aligns perfectly with our net-zero goals set for 2031.”
Nxtra has already made significant progress. The company has secured contracts for 422,000 MWh of renewable energy to date. Additionally, through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and on-site solar rooftop plants, Nxtra estimates saving around 156,595 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the 2023-24 financial year alone.
Nxtra’s commitment to RE100 sets a strong example for the data center industry in India. By embracing renewable energy, Nxtra is helping to reduce its environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.
