Parrot Plague: Deforestation Drives Feathered Invasion

Parrots

The charming town of Hilario Ascasubi, nestled near Argentina’s eastern Atlantic coast, has found itself grappling with an unexpected feathered invasion. Thousands of vibrant green-yellow-red parrots have descended upon the town, driven from their natural habitats by rampant deforestation in the surrounding hills, which has driven them closer to human settlements in search of food and shelter.

The situation has escalated in recent years, with the parrot population reaching alarming proportions during the autumn and winter months. Locals report that at times, there are as many as ten parrots for every human inhabitant.

The parrots’ presence has had a tangible impact on the town. They have been known to perch on electric cables, damaging them and causing power outages. Their incessant screeching and droppings have also become a source of annoyance for residents. The situation resembles Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film “The Birds,” with flocks of parrots swarming buildings and a church, creating an eerie atmosphere.

The locals tried to scare away the parrots with noise and laser lights, but it didn’t work. According to biologist, the only sustainable solution lies in restoring the region’s natural environments. Until that can be achieved, she emphasizes the need for strategies that promote harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
