India’s renewable energy sector is experiencing a significant talent shortage despite ambitious expansion plans by major corporations.
According to data from TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, the renewable energy sector is expected to create nearly 1.7 million jobs in the next three years. However, a staggering 1.2 million of these positions remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates.
The solar, wind, hydro, and battery storage sub-sectors are all facing a shortage of skilled workers. Only about 4.5 lakh out of the current pool of engineer graduates are employable in the sector. This is primarily due to a lack of specific skills and knowledge required for renewable energy projects.
To address this issue, experts urge rapid re-skilling of existing talent and expanded apprenticeship programs. Companies like Tatas, Adani, Reliance, Renew Power, Sterlite, Mahindra, and JSW are investing heavily in renewable energy and need skilled professionals.
Other companies like Waaree Energies, Serentica Renewables, and Sterlite Power are focusing on up-skilling, re-skilling, and recruiting top talent from campuses. Government initiatives like PM Surya Ghar and 12 smart cities could boost renewable energy jobs.
However, overcoming the talent shortage in the renewable energy sector will require a concerted effort from industry, academia, and government. By investing in talent, apprenticeships, and a supportive environment, India can fully utilize its renewable energy and achieve sustainable development.
