In a significant step towards sustainable urban development, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has partnered with Oil India Limited (OIL) to establish a biogas plant in Nayapalli. This cutting-edge facility will process wet waste from the city to generate biogas fuel and organic compost.
The plant spans eight acres and will process 200 tonnes of wet waste daily, with the ability to expand to 300 tonnes. Bhubaneswar generates approximately 380 tonnes of wet waste each day. Currently, workers scientifically treat 120 tonnes at 37 micro composting centers (MCCs), while they process the remaining 260 tonnes traditionally at a windrow composting center. The new plant will revolutionize waste management in the city, advancing its commitment to sustainable practices.
Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra highlighted the project’s impact. He stated, “This initiative moves Bhubaneswar closer to becoming a better and greater city. The system will convert biogas into fuel and use the compost to support agriculture.”
The government also plans to replicate such facilities in cities like Cuttack, Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur, and Berhampur.
Oil India Limited CMD Ranjit Rath underscored the plant’s contribution to India’s NetZero commitment. He noted that the facility would produce green natural gas and organic manure, transforming waste into valuable resources.
Bhubaneswar plans to complete the biogas plant within two years, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and eco-friendly practices. It marks a significant milestone in the city’s journey towards efficient waste management and environmental stewardship.
