India’s Solar PV Manufacturing Booms To 67 GW!

Over the past decade, India has made significant strides in its solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capabilities. Thanks to government initiatives like “Make in India,” the country’s solar PV module manufacturing capacity has surged from a modest 2.3 GW to an impressive 67 GW.

To further bolster domestic manufacturing, the government has introduced the Solar Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Under this scheme, 48 GW of solar PV module manufacturing projects are currently in progress. Once completed, these projects will not only boost the country’s manufacturing capacity but also create thousands of jobs.

The government’s commitment to promoting domestic manufacturing is evident in its various initiatives. These include providing incentives, supporting research and development, and imposing customs duties to protect domestic industries.

One of the key focuses of these efforts is to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing. By establishing a strong domestic industry, India aims to reduce its dependence on imports and become a major player in the global solar PV market.

In addition to solar PV modules, the government is also promoting the domestic manufacturing of other renewable energy equipment, such as wind turbines, electrolyzers for green hydrogen production, and battery energy storage systems. These initiatives are part of India’s broader goal of transitioning to a clean energy economy.
